For EMT's, no day on the job is ordinary. There is nothing about the job that is entirely routine. Each day can bring many heart pumping situations which can cause your adrenaline to get going and your mind to be racing, or each day can bring hours of sitting around waiting for a phone call. Almost every call you get will be a different situation, but your focus as an EMT must always remain the same. The only aspect of the job that is repetitive, is the fact that your main priority is the treatment and transportation of the patient to medical facilities. Other then that, you never know what the next phone call will bring. Along with life saving procedures, EMT's may also assist with childbirths, manage respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic, behavioral and environmental emergencies; or treat suspected poisonings. Many of the situations EMT's come across are stressful, and can take a toll on you physically as well as emotionally. Regardless of the situation EMT's are trained to stay calm under pressure and work efficiently and effectively. Nervous breakdowns and anxiety are not acceptable especially in the presence of patients. EMT's should be intelligent, confident, coordinated, and strong to perform their job to their best ability. From this short introduction you can see that being an EMT is no easy task, but it can be a very rewarding career.
